Continuing from the theme of my last post, I’m sharing here a lecture on Matthew I recently asked a class on the Gospels to view by Craig Keener, Professor of New Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary. An impressively productive scholar, Prof. Keener completed his PhD at Duke, and he is famous among New Testament scholars for having during his doctoral program read through all the ancient literature most relevant to the interpretation of the New Testament and created a card file of copious notes, indexed and cross-referenced. So now, when he undertakes to write a commentary (as he has done on Matthew, Acts, John, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, and Revelation), he pulls from his file all his notes for the book he’s working on and starts in. His overview of Matthew (through about 27:46 in the video) is one of the best I’ve seen and shows how the conclusion of the Gospel restates its overarching themes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsBFzWGCl7w. Enjoy!
