The Gospel according to Matthew, where we’ll be spending our time in chapel devotionals this semester, begins with an indication that the story of Jesus is the story of one who stands in a heritage of faith and divine promise extending back to David and beyond him to Abraham (Matthew 1:1).
Jesus comes among us as the fulfillment of God’s promises to make these figures in Israel’s history to make their names great (Genesis 12:2; 2 Samuel 7:9) and through them to bring blessing both to Israel and to the other nations.
The first specific prophetic promise Matthew cites as fulfilled is Isaiah’s announcement that through the remarkable birth of the child “Emmanuel,” God would give his people a sign of his presence with them (Matthew 1:23, quoting Isaiah 7:14).
In the middle of the Gospel, Jesus assures his disciples that wherever two or three of them gather in his name, he will be present among there, even in the challenging circumstances that require the church to discipline a member (Matthew 18:20).
At the end of the Gospel, Jesus lays on his disciples the obligation to convey his teaching to all the nations, but he does not leave us to our own devices in fulfilling this awesome responsibility. He pledges that, risen from the dead and granted all authority in heaven and on earth, his presence will continue with us on our journey to fulfill this great commission (Matthew 28:16–10).
