K. Terry Koonce retired as president of ExxonMobil Production Company in Houston, Texas and vice president of ExxonMobil Corporation on June 30, 2003 after more than 41 years of service.
He joined the Exxon organization in 1963 upon completion of his Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering at Rice University in Houston where he also received the bachelor’s degree in 1960. Terry spent several years with Exxon Production Research Company and held a variety of management positions both there and in the Production Department of Exxon Company, U.S.A.
In April 1985, Terry was named president and chief executive officer of Esso Resources Canada Limited. He was appointed a director of Imperial Oil Limited in July 1986. In February 1988, he was named senior vice president and a member of the Management Committee of Exxon Company, U.S.A. He was named president and chief executive officer of Exxon Research and Engineering Company in January 1990. Terry was appointed president and chief executive officer of Exxon Ventures (CIS) Inc., headquartered in Moscow, Russia, and Houston, Texas in October 1993, and was named president of ExxonMobil Production Company in December 1999.
Terry is a distinguished member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), a former member of the Board of the SPE and a former member of the Board of Offshore Technology Conference. He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Greater Houston Partnership and a member of the Governor’s Business Council. He’s also served as a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Greater Houston United Way (GHUW) and as co-chairman of the 2003-2004 general campaign. He currently serves on the Resource Development Committee of the GHUW. From 2000 to 2008, Terry served on the Board of Trustees of Rice University and is now a trustee emeritus.
Terry has served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Austin Graduate School of Theology in Austin, Texas, on the Board of Directors of Heartbeat Ministries in Norwich, Vermont, chairman emeritus of the Board of Directors of Target Hunger in Houston, a member of the Board of Directors of African Outreach Ministries in Houston, chairman of the Development Board for Lifeline Chaplaincy in Houston, member of the Advisory Council of the Greater Houston Community Foundation, member of the Advisory Council for Fuller Theological Seminary in Houston, member of the Board of Regents of Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, and on the Board of Trustees of Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Terry has served as an elder in the Church of Christ in three states and Alberta (Canada). He is married to the former Carole Baker of Nashville, Tennessee. Together they have six children and 11 grandchildren. He currently resides in Montgomery, Texas on Lake Conroe.
