Jerry Christian currently serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees at Austin Graduate School of Theology, having joined the Board in 2012. He is a retired public school educator, having served most of his 47 years as superintendent. Before retiring, his last two positions were in San Antonio as superintendent of Alamo Heights ISD for 13 years and as CEO of Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children for five years.
Jerry has served as an elder in the Granbury Church of Christ and San Antonio MacArthur Park Church of Christ. He has also served on the Board of Medina Children’s Home and other non-profit education boards. While he received his B.A. in math and engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin), he took student teaching his senior year to fulfill an elective course and immediately found his calling to teach. Jerry began teaching math at Dallas Kimball High School in 1966 before becoming an elementary school principal in Duncanville, Texas. Later, he completed his doctorate at UT Austin and has been a school superintendent until retirement in 2013.
Jerry is married to his San Saba High School sweetheart, Sheila McDowell Christian. They have four children and eight grandchildren (with another on the way). One son is band director at Vista Ridge High School in Leander; another is an assistant principal in Killeen ISD; another is fire marshal in Temple; and their daughter is a teacher’s assistant. More importantly, they’re all very involved in their walk with the Lord. Jerry and Sheila retired to Lampasas where Jerry was superintendent in the early 1980’s and not far from the ranch where Sheila grew up. Sheila’s mother, at 87, still lives on the family ranch. Sheila has taught Cradle Roll for most of their 48 years of marriage, and they both continue to enjoy the love of teaching in the Lampasas Church of Christ.
